This is an intro page from the online gallery, and has been for the most part, left as is.
It has been retained here as an example for “Portfolio” purposes only.
We are no longer reviewing artist’s portfolios.

This slightly off-center gallery presents a wide range of contemporary painting, sculpture, and photography from regional, national, and international artists.
The gallery’s goal is eloquently expressed by the I-Ching (the Chinese Book of Changes): “...The social responsibility of the artist is reuniting people with their reality.” It goes on to say, “Through self knowledge, re-acquaint yourself with your true, heartfelt origins, and reunite your Self with your source.”

A Short History of the Gallery

The Bastoky Gallery officially opened its doors on August 1st, 1995, (as the Greenwood Gallery) with an exhibit by the very talented artist and former co-worker at Microsoft, Tina Anderson. The Grand Opening drew a crowd of more than 250 people into a 750 sq.ft. exhibit space. Throughout the night, people and champagne overflowed on to Greenwood Ave. and beyond. It was said that “this is the biggest party that Greenwood's seen in 20 years!”

For two years following the Anderson exhibit, the gallery was host to a series of month long, well received exhibits. Exhibitors included some of the finest established and emerging artist from the Northwest and the West Coast.

The online gallery, one of the very first in the area, went online in October, 1995. The website was thereafter updated monthly to reflect the current physical gallery exhibit. A number of pieces were purchased via the website, by local clients as well as from other areas of the Northwest and as far away as Chicago. The online gallery also received an MSN “Pick of the Week” for Arts and Entertainment during the week of 6/19/96, and Microsoft’s Seattle.Sidewalk gave it a “Sidewalk’s Choice” award and a review on 4/25/97.

Even though the physical gallery was well received by the community — taking a number of risks by showing California artists such as Teresa Moore, as well as local artists such as Sally Banfill it was forced to close its doors for good exactly two years after opening. One of our goals was to keep prices reasonable, with artwork averaging $1,500 on the high end, and always a range of pieces costing $300 or less on the low end.

The Online Gallery has now been reopened after a hiatus of approx. 18 months. We will continue to show the work of some of the artists we represented previously in the physical gallery and we will be looking at new work as well. We will present monthly online exhibits of the highest quality artwork, offered at affordable prices. We also hope to continue our tradition of education with on-going articles for the beginning art collector, on how to look at art and what art is all about, written in plain English. We expect, from time to time, to have a guest reviewer who will discuss some of the art you will see here. These reviews will be informative and enlightening, not mean-spirited critiques that do nothing more than obfuscate and condescend. (NOTE: The online gallery is closed, offline, gone. We are no longer reviewing porfolios. I am now concentrating on my own painting, as much as possible.)

Thanks for visiting the Bastoky Online Gallery. Please come back soon and often. We'd also like to hear from you. Let us know how we're doing, any suggestions you may have for improvements to the website, or anything you might want to discuss or debate relating to the art and articles you see here.

Remember, artists have to make a living too. Support the arts by supporting the artists.

Gary Bastoky -- owner, director and trouble-maker.
